Analysis of the Japanese language from the translator's point of view. Covers the structure, cultural and stylistic components, semantics, dialectal differences and lexical obstacles in Japanese.

TRN 151 English for Translation (3)

Analysis of the English language from the translator's point of view. Covers structure, cultural and stylistic components, semantics, standard mechanics and punctuation, and metaphorical and idiomatic English.

TRN 160 Japanese-English Interpretation (3)

Focuses on a general interpretation between English and Japanese in a number of contexts.

TRN 170 Technology and Tools for Translation (3)

Overview of technology and computer programs that facilitate the work of the translator. Covers transcription/translation programs, information distribution techniques, file transfer technologies, and using the World Wide Web in translation and interpretation. Includes applied projects.

TRN 200 Translation Workshop I: General, Educational, Literary, and Business (3)

Introduction to the translation specialty areas of literature, general business, general document, current events, and popular culture document translation. Covers types of documents, elements and characteristics of specialty documents, area resources, ethical and legal restrictions, and development of special translation skills in business, education, and literature.

TRN 201 Translation Workshop II: Legal, Medical, Scientific, and Technical (3)

Introduction to the translation specialty areas of law, health care, scientific and technical document translation. Covers types of documents, elements and characteristics of specialty documents, translation resources in each field, and development of translation skills in law, medicine, science, and technology.

TRN 300 Advanced Individual Studies in Translation (3)

Individually arranged studies focusing on one major specialty in translation services. Meant to develop student skills in preparation for, or concurrent with, the advanced project or practicum in translation.

TRN 301: Advanced Project/Practicum in Translation (3)

Specialty area advanced project producing a translated product or working a minimum of 100 hours with an agency/individual sponsor, in on-site and/or supervised training.
