Certificate in Translation

The Certificate in Translation seeks to give those with an associates degree or higher specialized training to work in fields requiring translation skills. The Certificate requires proof of advanced standing in both English and Japanese languages. Advanced standing in English may be proven through the normal admissions process, while proof of advanced standing in Japanese may be obtained through satisfactory results on the Nihongo Noryoku Shiken (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) or an OIC Placement Test. Without advanced standing, students must complete Japanese language courses through the advanced intermediate level (JPN 121) or English courses through the advanced intermediate level (ENG 095) prior to entering the translation program. Credits in these courses will not count toward the number required for the Certificate. It is expected that, assuming a student's proficiency in the language pair, the Certificate may be completed in one year of full-time study. The program consists of seven required courses, plus a practicum or final project. The courses making up the Certificate in Translation are:
  • TRN 150: Japanese for Translation (3)
  • TRN 151: English for Translation (3)
  • TRN 160: Japanese-English Interpretation (3)
  • TRN 170: Technology and Tools for Translation (3)
  • TRN 200: Translation Workshop I: General, Literary, and Business (3)
  • TRN 201: Translation Workshop II: Legal, Medical, and Technical (3)
  • TRN 300: Advanced Individual Studies in Translation (3)
  • TRN 301: Advanced Project/Practicum in Translation (3)
