Initiatives for Faculty Development
At the outset, the College will institute several faculty professional development initiatives for full-time faculty.
First, the College will offer Accumulated Teaching Release Time (ATRT), whereby teaching loads will be reduced according to
the number of hours taught over the minimum for each trimester. These hours may be carried over from year to year and may
be utilized at any time for a maximum of one year release from teaching duties at regular salary.
Second, the College encourages Grant Release Time (GRT) whereby teaching duties are reduced based on grant monies applied
for and received by a faculty member. The amount of release time depends upon the nature of the grant, but is limited to
100% release time for three consecutive trimesters, 75% for four consecutive trimesters, 50% for five consecutive
trimesters, and 25% for six consecutive trimesters. Additional time requires special, written permission from the
President of the College.
Third, the faculty member has the option to pursue scholarship, personal or professional development (Personal Release
Time, PRT) for up to two years in unpaid leave.
Fourth, the College will set aside funds for memberships in professional organizations and travel to conferences.
Both part-time and full-time faculty members are eligible to apply, but will be reimbursed at different percentages
according to rank and full- or part-time status.
Fifth, both full- and part-time faculty members will be able to audit courses within the College free of charge, on a
space-available basis.
Sixth, both full- and part-time faculty members will be encouraged to take advantage of regular in-house seminars on
information literacy and new teaching techniques and technologies developed both by outside vendors and OIC faculty
members. At least one seminar will be offered each trimester.
Faculty scholarship and research will be encouraged through teaching release programs such as Accumulated Teaching
Release Time (ATRT), Grant Release Time (GRT), and Personal Release Time (PRT), described above. They will also be
encouraged to apply for funds for memberships in professional organizations and travel to conferences. The College will
also offer Student-Faculty Roundtables as requested by faculty members where faculty may present work in an encouraging and
multidisciplinary atmosphere for feedback.
