About Ohio International College
Mission
Ohio International College, a private, not-for-profit educational institution, seeks to develop discerning global citizens.
It pursues excellence in education, research, and service to the communities it serves, with particular reference to the
relationship between Japan and the United States.
History
Japan United States Teaching was founded in 1992 as a non-profit educational organization in Johnston, Iowa, with offices and
operations primarily in Columbus, Ohio. According to Article III of its Articles of Incorporation, Japan United States
Teaching was to “operate educational training schools, research facilities and related activities across
the United States of America and possibly other nations of the world.” Since 1998 Japan United States Teaching has operated
a main office at 5295 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio and in 2003 opened a branch office, dedicated to special
programs and academic testing, at 1166 Kenny Centre Mall, Columbus, Ohio. In August 2004, JUST's President, Dr. Hideo
Ishikawa, announced the Institute's intention to create postsecondary programs under the name Ohio International College.
Accreditation
OIC is not yet regionally accredited, but will pursue accreditation through the North Central Association of
Colleges and Schools. The initial step will be to follow the laws of Ohio and the regulations of the Ohio Board of
Regents, as demanded by the Higher Learning Commission’s General Institutional Requirements that an institution meet “all
the legal requirements to operate as an institution of higher education wherever it conducts its activities." To meet
these requirements under Ohio law, a Certificate of Authorization is necessary (see Ohio Revised Code 1713.02).
Upon attainment of a Certificate of Authorization from the Ohio Board of Regents, OIC will immediately
seek accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission.
Governance
The members of the Board of Trustees of the College come from a range of backgrounds. The
seven Trustees serve three-year renewable terms and meet quarterly.
They are responsible for the overall strategic planning and
operational direction of the College, and the appointment and evaluation of the President of
the College.
The President, Dr. Hideo Ishikawa, is responsible for personnel and administrative decisions
concerning the College.
The President develops an annual plan for the academic and strategic planning of the
College and presents it to the Board
of Trustees at its spring quarterly meeting for review, revision, and approval. The President
is expected to consult the
Board of Trustees on the direction and operations of the College at the Board’s
quarterly meetings.
